Students With Disabilities Deserve More Than a Handicap Parking Space

As the nation mark the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on July 26th, the landmark civil rights law that outlawed discrimination based on disability, we also honor a movement that refuses to settle for the bare minimum.

The House, Inc. founded the National Capital A Cinderella Ball to do just that: challenge expectations. From day one, The House, Inc. has empowered thousands of students to step up as youth activists through its capstone service-learning project giving voice and visibility to peers who are too often pushed to the sidelines of society. What began as a bold model for inclusion sparked a national movement, inspiring teens across the country to advocate for their peers and change lives especially for those judged or excluded simply for being different.

The impact is undeniable. With former First Lady Michelle Obama serving as Honorary Chair, the National Capital A Cinderella Ball at the iconic Willard Hotel in Washington, D.C., became more than a gala, it became a statement. The Ball features a private dinner, live entertainment, and powerful moments that celebrate the courage and resilience of these young people.

Unforgettable performances and appearances have lit up the Ball, including Jamie Foxx, Bell Biv DeVoe, speed painter David Garibaldi, Shark Tank’s Robert Herjavec, American Idol finalist Jordin Sparks, Empire stars Grace Gealey and Trai Byers, and gospel duo Mary Mary.

But this isn’t just about one night.  It’s a call to action that hasn’t let up.  The House, Inc. continues to protest the deep-rooted injustices and barriers still faced by the disabled community. Because a parking space isn’t equality. It’s a starting point.  We invite you to advance your advocacy. Be an ally. Demand more. Help build a world where access, respect, and opportunity aren’t up for debate.

Rewatch the National Capital A Cinderella Ball now and join the movement.
